Registrar's Corner

Members of the Utah Cancer Registrars Association (UCRA) are an integral part of cancer surveillance in the State of Utah.  Their dedication and commitment has been the foundation for achieving high standards in data quality and completeness statewide, and this effort is recognized nationally by the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR).

The UCRA is 37 members strong, representing 10 hospital systems, the state central cancer registry (UCR), and others in the State of Utah.  Nowhere has their combined experience and knowledge been more crucial to cancer surveillance and clinical outcomes research as in the recent implementation of Collaborative Staging, Version 2 (CSv2), which dramatically increased the amount of and broadened the scope of cancer surveillance data to include biomarker and other prognostic factors.

The high quality data provided by cancer registrars has contributed to a large number of public health and research programs including the Utah Cancer Control Program, the Utah Environmental Public Health Tracking Program, Utah’s Indicator-Based Information System for Public Health (IBIS-PH),  the SEER Program and NAACCR, the Huntsman Cancer Institute’s  High Risk Clinics, the Utah Population Database (UDPB), and other genetic and epidemiologic research studies conducted in collaboration with the Utah Cancer Registry.

They are truly the front line of cancer surveillance efforts, paving the way for a cure!
